Notes for *Edward I "Longshanks" PLANTAGENET , King of England |
He is described by the "Military History" magazine as being a handsome man with piercing blue eyes with a left eyelid that drooped. He stood at 6'2" tall. He and his wife, Eleanor were 3rd cousins. They had 13 children, 6 living to maturity.
He subdued the Welsh in 1283 and created the title "Prince of Wales" for his son, Edward II. He battled with the Scots, and carried away the great Stone of Scone upon which Scottish kings had been crowned for hundreds of years. He gained many lands from France by his marriage to Eleanor and made his father's success in the Baron's War possible.
In the Barons War 1264-67 he defeated the Barons at Evesham (1265). As king he is noted for encouraging Parliamentary institutions at the expense of feudalism and for subduing Wales on which he imposed the English system of administration. He later tried to assert his authority over Scotland (1290-1307) and died while on his way to fight Robert the Bruce.
