He became King after his brother, Richard "The Lionhearted" died in 1199. He is remembered as probably the worst king in English history. His barons revolted against him and he was forced to sign THE MAGNA CHARTA on June 15, 1215 at Runnymeade. This document and its long term effect was not truly appreciated by the academics of the day. Pope Innocent III condemed it and on 16 Dec 1215 the barons were excommunicated.

The Magna Charta begins: "John, by the grace of God, King of England, the Lord of Ireland, Duke of Normandy and Aquitaine, and Count of Anjou, to the archbishops, abbots, earls, barons, justiciars, foresters, sheriffs, stewards, servants and to all his bailiffs and liege subjects, greetings. ..." His later repudiation of the charter led to the first barons war 1215-17 during which John Died.

In warring with Phillip II Augustus of France he lost several continental possessions including Normandy by 1205.

He was the fourth son of Henry II and the father of Henry III. He first married Isabel of Gloucester.
