142 p. 980-981 "He succeeded his grandfather as Baron and was summoned to Parliament as a Baron from 29 Dec. 1229 (during the reign of Edward I) to 26 Nov 1313 (during the reign of Edward II). This nobleman participated in the Scottish wars of Edward I, and had a principal command in the British army. In 1285 he was found to be cousin and heir of Ralph de Gaugi, Baron of Slefsmouth, paid his relief and had livery of that inheritance. In 1297, on the death of Richard FitzJohn, a great baron in County Esses, this Robert de Clifford, as son of Isabel, daugh. and co-heir of Robt. de Vipount, by Isabel FitzJohn his wife, he was found to be one of the cousins and next heirs of the same Richard FitzJohn.
This Robert was the first of this family who had summons to Parliament, after the adoption of that mode of creating peers, and sat in all Parliaments from 1299 to 1313, inclusive.
He fell in the following reign at the disastrous Battle of Bannockburn, where the Scots so completely defeated the English army in 1313 during the reign of Ed.II.
He was summoned to Parliament in the 13th and 14th year of the reign of Edward II, 1320-1321, in which last year he died and his next brother succeeded him as Baron." |
