In 1810's census for Manlius, Onondaga County, NY William Swain is head of household with five males and two females living in his home. Source: Rootsweb website for Onondaga Co., NY. -------------------------------------------------- According to Kathy Crowell of the Manlius Historical Society, "William Swain, who died in the War of 1812, had a carding machine both at the old mills on Pompey Center Rd., south of Manlius Village and also in Manlius Village." -------------------------------------------------- 74He is listed in the Town of Manlius Soldiers, War of 1812 as follows: Swain, Wm., Private in Capt. Daniel Mulholland's artillery company. He died in the war on his birthday, (October 11) 1812, age 31. Carder. Married Phylura Dunham ------------------------------------------------- 75There was a purchase of land by a W. Swain in Manlius from Lovina & Samuel D. Allen in 1811. (Book "K", pg. 407). Lot 98. -------------------------------------------------- He served in the War of 1812 with military pension noted in the Nat'l. Archives. The genealogy software states that his son, Thos. E. would have been born after his death. Walt E. Smith says, "The Newburyport birth records have a "William Swain, s. Edward & Elizabeth, Oct 3, 1780". He believes this is the same Wm., even though the dates differ by 1 week and 1 year. -------------------------------------------------- William died from a fever contracted during the War of 1812 at Tokett Harbor, Branford, New Haven, CT.
