Notes for John Elliott TODD , M.D.
There is a John E. Todd listed in the 1830 census for Manlius, Onondaga Co., NY. --------------------------------------------------- According to an article penned by J. Rosaline Smith for the Fayetteville, NY Eagle-Banner newspaper, John E. Todd wrote to his "brother" less than 20 years after the first regular train service had been inaugurated between Syracuse and Auburn. He wrote: "I arrived at this place [Philadelphia] yesterday noon [May 1, 1857] after detention upon detention, but thankful there was no accident. Too late for the train when I arrived in Rochester, stayed all night. Too late for train at Elmira. Stayed from 1 o'clock till 11 at night. Arrived in Williamsport at 6 in the morning. Too late again. Stayed until 2 p.m. at Port Clinton. Too late again. Stayed from 8 p.m. until 7 the next morning and finally got here." Boat travel seemed no better to John, judging from this letter written November 11, 1860, adds Smith. He states, "I had, as I anticipated, an unpleasant night down the Hudson River on the boat. I don't know why it is, but I do hate to go up or down the river on a steamboat. The berths are narrow and the sheets almost always damp, and I am either too cold or too hot or too damp, or something is the matter to make me dissatisfied. However, I got along very well this time." --------------------------------------------------- 14According to William Elliott Todd's diary, April 23, 1868 had the following entry: "Received a telegram of the death of Uncle Elliott." He was a physician, lived in Auburn, NY; Philadelphia, PA and Baldwinsville, NY. His obit is on file in the Todd Scrapbook.
