In April of 1676 Charles Tilden sat on a jury in a case of trespass. Folio 71 -------------------------------------------------- Charles is listed as Foreman of a jury on a court case in March 1679. Henry Darnall Then tendred to this board an address made to his Lspp by severall the Inhabitants of Kent County against Humphry Elliot being as foll viz May it please your Lspp [lordship]: Wee the Inhabitants of Langfords Bay in Kent County haveing undergone the vast mischiefes troubles losses and Damages that we have susteined by one Ellis Humphryes late of Langfords Bay hundred in your Lspps County of Kent by his killing of our stocks of hoggs and disturbing of our stocks of Cattle and continuall menaceing threatning of the poore Inhabitants of this hundred to burn their houses and waste their goods soe that many of us were weary of our habitations and others forced by his wicked and Malitious Actions both to their bodyes and Estates to sell and Quitt their possessions, and whereas the sd Ellis Humphrys hath lately been convicted off ffellony and was committed into the custody of the Sheriff of this County from whom he made his Escape, on which his said Estate was by the sheriff secured into the hands of the Hundred untill condemnation, upon wch Sarah his wife hath peticoned your Lspp for the Estate, and as wee are credibly informed that the said Sarah together with some other of her Assistants doth intend after that your Lspp: hath granted her the said Estate to peticon yor Lspp to grant unto the said Ellis his pardon, soe that then he may come & live amongst us again which may proove very much destructive unto us: Therefore we your Lspps most humble Servants doe most humbly pray your Lspp: that if it be your Lspps: pleasure to grant the said Ellis Humphryes his pardon that your Lspp: will be pleased to take such care to protect us from the wrong and injury that may accrue unto us by his being placed amongst us againe as shall seeme most fitt and convenient by your Lspp: Your Lspps. most humble Servtts Henry Hosier, Thomas Warren, Charles Tilden, Cornelius Comegys Jr, John I Chandler, William Harris, Ed:Inglish, William H Hubbard, Thomas Parker, Cornelius Comegys Jr, Elias King, John Bowles, John J T Twiney, Willam Deane, George Greene, John Addison Lib. P. 223 -------------------------------------------------- 212There is a land record as follows: Charles Tilden 26 Jun 1686 "Bishford" 200 acres in Kent County, MD Reference 25/226;33/221 -------------------------------------------------- At a Councill held at the City of St Maryes the 10th day of Aprill 1688. Present: The honble - Coll: Thomas Tailler, Coll: Vincent Lowe, Coll. Henry Darnall, Coll. Wm Digges & Majr Nicholas Sewall At a Councill held the same day & present as above except Majr Sewall. Was produced and read a Letter from the Comissrs of Kent County, vizt November 23rd 1687. New Yarmouth. May it please your Honors There are some persons in the last Comisso for this County which we humbly pray your Honors may not be put in again upon these reasons, as Capt Wm Laurence who is a person now grown aged and deaf and seldom helpfull to us, and himself desirous to be out, Mr Isaack Winchester not an Inhabitant in this County and Mr Charles Tilden by whose meanes we have been often disappointed & one who is so genlly taken notice of for his imperious [disdainful: having or showing arrogant superiority to and disdain of those one views as unworthy] behaviour as not thought fit for what your Honors have been pleased to confere upon therefore request your Honors to send us up a New Comisso omitting the person above mentioned and adding Mr Allan Smith of Kent Island. O. -------------------------------------------------- Charles' signature appears on a Naval Officers Bond dated 7 Oct 1693 (Lib. C. B.) -------------------------------------------------- In Oct 1696 the records of the Proceedings of the Council of Maryland explain that Kent County is divided into two Parishes, Kent Island and St. Pauls Parish. Kent Island parish is founded naturally within itself, and St. Pauls Parish consists of the rest of the county. The name of Charles Tilden is one of six Vestrymen listed for St. Pauls Parish with the others being Mr Wm ffrisby, Mr Micha Miller, Mr Thomas Smith, Mr Hans Hanson & Mr Simn Wilmore [Wilmer] Lib. H. D. -------------------------------------------------- In late Nov 1696 the name Charles Tilden appears in the list of men who are seeking the release of, and mercy for, a Philip Clark. They agree that: Although we cannot approve but dislike former addresses for the ease and reserve of Philip Clark yet we are moved to become intercessors for him not approving his actions but pitying his folly and misfortunes, and not so much for his own as for the sake of his wife and innocent children who bears a part of his (justly deserved) sufferings. Lib. H. D., p. 191 -------------------------------------------------- On the record for 12 Nov 1698 a Charles Tilden is listed as a member of the Grand Jury. This text appeared immediately below the notation of who were members of the Assembly and Grand Jury. Then his Exncy was pleased to tell the house that he was heartyly Sorry they had been so long upon the Countrys busienss which might have been much sooner dispatched had not their owne private heates Jarrs and Animosity Interupted it, But forasmuch as that he hopes they are all now buried in the Depth of Oblivion he is not willing to revive them againe. As to the Gentn of his Matys [magesty's]honble Councill he does on his Matys behalfe returne them thanks for their Zeale to his Matys Service & asure them he will recomend the same to his Maty And for as much as he hoped all differrences were reconciled and forgott he would not make any distinction or seperation among the Gentn of the house of Delegates for that he was willing to beleve what happened was through Inaduertency ... | ||||||||
