ASHAEL SUMNER DEAN
CIVIL WAR LETTERS TO
HIS FAMILY
No Date, no name, no location, however,
believed to be circa Mar 10 1864
We are at anchor between F. Munroe and Rip
Raps and the most beautiful anchorage I ever saw It is the forts are beautiful
and imposing and in the roads astern are some fifty vessels or more among them
is a French a Russian & an English Man-o-War I may have a chance to go ashore
today I may not You will of course read to Father & the others what you find in
my letters that is not meant for you alone I do not have the time to write to
them seperatly yet in time I intend to send them all a letter I shall expect all
the news from N.B. when you write I always dislike to close a letter to you and
that is the reason I put in these bits of scraps you need not read them unless
you chose but I mean lots of love when I write them The Admiral is very much a
affected by the death of his son ( Ulric died Jan 1864-ed.) and will try to
obtain his body We sent off a boat to Butler last eve at 11 o'clock and they
found him and his staff up and hard at work all in transacting the business of
his department We have not yet heard any local news I love you very much, kiss
dear birds often for their papa Did you dream of me last night? do you dream of
me often? I must say a kind goodbye and hope to finish many letters in Wash.
