Two 24 foot diameter sidewheels driven by a single cylinder vertical beam engine, 41 inches in diameter having a 10 foot  stroke.   The engine had been salvaged from a steamer that was lost in the China sea.  The engine was first shipped to Halifax, Nova Scotia and then to Portland Maine where it was rebuilt by the Portland Company and designated  as their engine number 4.    Steam was generated in two boilers with a single stack and fired by coal. Feed water was taken directly from outboard the ship and fed to the boilers without treatment.
