CIVIL WAR LETTERS TO

Steamer Charleston
Feb’y 18th 1865
Dear Dear Wife:
The news which I spoke of yesterday is being confirmed. You will
hear it from the papers before I can get it to you but you may want to know
how we received it - I am writing outside on the way from Stono to Charleston
~ 9 miles ~.
God never gave us a more beautiful day nor has the sea ever been more
enchanting. It is as warm as May, and the long deep swell rocks us as gently
as our Mothers used to do ~
We have been looking for this knowing it must come for Sherman was closing
down. Branchville was occupied sometime ago and they have been almost
enclosed for some days. They could not remain. Yesterday we knew it for we
have for a long time been able to read all their signals ~ they not knowing
it. The last blockade runner we ran ashore two days ago and burned her -
yesterday. They removed from James and Sullivans Island we firing upon them
all the while. Now the old flag floats over all those places. The Army
occupy James Island. The Navy took possession of Moultrie and Sullivan’s
Island and this forenoon we shall walk up through the ruins. The work of the
Navy is done I can come home when you say the word! May be not on leave - But
my appointment can be revoked by the asking ~ I must not do so now. I must
stay awhile as there may be a chance to see you on leave soon. I think there
will. Every one runs over with joy because the labor, the hard, wet,
dangerous work is done! and we have only to observe it watch -
May we have continued success and I see you once more and not hear aught more
of this tiresome strife.
I shall expect to be in the “Mills House” tonight. Virginia, I have been
able thus far not to increase my joy by joining in the whiskey jubilee - very
many will be intoxicated before night. This is to assure you and let you know
that in joy and gladness as well as in dissapointment I think of you. Love You
- Be a good girl and increase your prayers for your Sumner and your children
and your own dear self. Kiss them for me.
This will go in the special steamer WANDO
Ever yours
Sumner
You will get a draft by the 1st The MASS will take it She goes North
23rd.
