 CIVIL WAR LETTERS TO HIS FAMILY

 

 

 

Port Royal Oct 3rd 1864

 

Dear Virginia,

  Your letter of the 11th you didn't date.  It was received on the 28th.  The ARAGO leaves N.Y. Oct 12th and the MASSACHUSETTS Oct 15th from Philadelphia for P. Royal.  The FULTON Oct 20th

  How glad I was to find from your letter that you were all well and happy.  It made me almost contented to be away from you.

  We are under repairs now.  A room and office are being built for the Fleet Capt.  The Captain left us to day and the ship is temporarily in the hands of Mr. Sargent with Mr. Jenney, Executive Officer.  A new Ensign has joined us and one will come in addition in a day or two.  We have two new Engineers.  All good men and much liked thus far.  Pay'r came back Sat and he is glad to have the opportunity.  We are all happy and everything goes on smoothly.  The Pay'r and Doct. out rank the Commanding & Executive now, but we all get on nicely.  The Admiral will go up to C.(Charleston-ed.) with us in a few days as soon as we can get the ship ready. when ............. He was gracious enough to send his orderly for me to say "The Admiral wishes to see you sir".  He wanted me to see a prisoner who had escaped from the Rebs and whom he thought might need my aid.  That was his excuse for sending old useless for he would have been called for all the same

  I saw him, fed him, and gave him a dose of salts! Oh dear, I am sorry to say the A. is furious for
