William Elliott Todd, Acting 3rd Assistant Engineer, USS Harvest Moon
| Served aboard the Harvest Moon from February 22, 1865 to
March 9, 1865. His letter to his brother in law, Dr. George B.
Todd, Acting Assistant Surgeon on the monitor Montauk,
describes conditions on the Harvest Moon and comments on
the sinking. Born August 14, 1842 in Manlius, NY, the son of Timothy
Mather Todd and Elizabeth Ann Swain. Died April 17, 1923
in Philadelphia, PA at age 80. Buried at Fayetteville Cemetery,
Fayetteville, NY. Married Julia Rosaline June, daughter of
Seymour Andrew June and Rosaline D. Foster, on May 9,
1866 in Fayetteville, NY. Julia was born on August 26, 1842
in Fayetteville, NY and died February 8, 1869 at age 26 in
Fayetteville, NY. She is buried in the family plot at the
Fayetteville cemetery. Pension number 54195
At the age of 16 he left his home in Fayetteville and journeyed to Philadelphia where he obtained work as an apprentice
machinist at the Neafie & Levi Shipyards. On February 8, 1865 he was appointed 3rd Assistant Engineer in the Union Navy
at Philadelphia. Upon his release from the Navy in 1866 he returned to Philadelphia and resumed work at the shipyard. He
eventually became the General Superintendent and a Director of the yard where he remained until he retired in 1903. In 1902
he purchased a Locomobile steam automobile in Syracuse, NY. After his death this vehicle was donated to the Smithsonian
Institution where it has been on public display.

Inscription on scabbard: This sword was used by Wm. E. Todd while serving as Assistant Engineer on the Gunboat Harvest Moon U. S. Navy during the Civil War 1864-5.
